Barbara Drake (Director)
At an early stage in my working life I chose to pursue a career in Human Resources and became professionally qualified in this field in 1984. For 16 years I worked for various organisations as Personnel Manager in a generalist role which covered the whole spectrum of employee related issues.
In 2001 I saw an opportunity to set up my own HR Consultancy business which I ran successfully as a Limited Company until 2016. In this role I had two types of clients; the majority were small owner managed businesses typically employing less than 100 employees. I would advise them on all matters from recruitment, employee/performance management, pay structures, business restructuring and sadly, redundancy and closure in some cases. I also undertook several large projects over the years as the main Consultant for bigger businesses leading change management projects with their in-house HR team functionally reporting to me. This meant I liaised with Solicitors and Barristers on matters, attended Employment Tribunals as representative for my clients, attended client Board meetings to advise on HR matters and often was very embedded within their organisation. These were the projects I most enjoyed and occupied around 50% of my time.
In 2016 I bought a Guest House in North Wales and ran that successfully until 2022 when I chose to sell and retire to North Yorkshire. As a small business owner I was responsible for all the front of house, accounts, marketing, client services etc. During this time I became active in the local community and was Vice Chair of the Betws-y-Coed & District Tourism Association for a year and Chair for four years until I left. This was a voluntary role and the Association is essentially a marketing organisation with around 70 member businesses. During the Covid pandemic, members looked to me to guide and advise them on the impact to their businesses and support available from the Government etc.
In addition to the above, I was a Community Governor for a secondary school in Northamptonshire for 7 years (c2005-2012).
